Neo-Oberth Destroyer

The post-SW1 version of the Oberth Class of UNS Destroyer. The Neo-Oberth features speeds, fold driver and facilities comparable with other UNS ships of the post-SWI era. In addition, recycled parts from Zentraedi ships have been used extensively, most noticeably in the engines and surface plating of the Neo-Oberth Destroyer. Thus making for an extremely maneuverable armoured destroyer ideally suited for scouting, long range patrol and escorting the larger capital ships of the era (Megaroad class colony ships and refit Zentraedi warships for example.)
In addition to the aforementioned changes, the UNS decided to opt away from the heavy missiles that the original Oberth Destroyer carried. The loss of firepower was more then offset by the inclusion of hangar and launch facilities for one squadron of VF fighters. The VF fighters greatly increased the effectiveness and usefulness of the Destroyer. Due to the valuable lessons learned from this, VFs were included in all UNS ships produced after the Neo-Oberth Destroyer.
The last major alteration was the inclusion of Zentraedi sensors into the nose assembly of the Neo-Oberth Destroyer. This gave the destroyer sensors that were far in advance of what the UNS had during the initial years of the post SW1 era.
Most of the Neo-Oberth ships have been retired by the year 2040. By 2050, the only remaining active ships of this class are the ones that have been extensively modified into being fleet ECM and EECM vessels. Such modified vessels are rumored to have the ECM capabilities to make entire Mercury sized planets disappear from long range sensors.
Systems changes of note from the original stats:
- Main Laser Cannon x1 (GM option)
- Zentraedi Style Retractable Laser Turrets x 4
- Retractable Missile Turrets x4 (similar to the ones on New Macross Carriers)
- 12 VF fighters (originally VF-4s)
- Shuttle bay (room for two shuttles or 3 VFs, in Gerwalk mode.)
