History: Valen was born to unknown parents and discovered as a newly-born infant abandoned in the wake of Anti-UN warring. Genetically-speaking, Valen is half Zentran and half-human, and was matched with adoptive parents of similar, if not exact, cultural diversity. These new parents were Koren and Krystal Devereaux on the fledgling colony world of Neo Beijing. Work was difficult to come by on this backwards colony world, especially among bigots still bitter in the wake of Space War I (and especially towards “genetic traitors” like Koren, who had wed an alien Meltradi). The Devereaux family’s stay on Neo Beijing was brief, as they soon heard the Siren’s song of fortune and social freedom that the Vensari System provided. They packed their belongings, and relocated to the (aptly named) small mountain community of Paesino della Montagna on Vensari Prime.

Koren worked steadily as a research annalist, while his mother, a Meltradi survivor of much senseless xenophobic bigotry thanks to the Anti-UN Terrorist break-outs of the time, served as a commercial shuttle pilot for the colony. Early life was fairly “normal” and uneventful for young Valen. He was raised in a loving, if not wealthy, family.

For the first fifteen years of his life, Valen never left the orbit of his world, despite his mother’s occupation – not that it bothered him . . . with such a beautiful world to live upon, why would anyone wish to leave?

In his teens, Val extended his love of nature to the skies themselves, and began training for a civilian pilot’s license. About this time, his mother left civic flying to become the personal pilot for Arturo Vensari, founder of Vensari Industries as well as the single greatest private contributor of Vensari Colonies (he is widely regarded as the “owner” of these worlds). As time passed, his mother’s disposition turned more and more sour as she worked with the overbearing businessman, but the creds were too good to pass up. Today, Krystal is the personal pilot of his son, Arturo Vensari II.

At eighteen, Val began flying civil defense and rescue for the colony. On one such outing, he saved two stranded hikers from a mountaintop, who later nicknamed him “Halo” – a callsign that has since stuck.

Four months prior to the events of "Beginhill: Jade Ospreys", Valen arrives home to discover his father asleep on the family couch. Much to the young man's horror, Koren was not sleeping, but dead following a sudden and severe heart attack resulting from a slight congenital defect. As great an emotional impact, the family suffered an equally great financial impact. With his father's heart excluded from Life Insurance policies, his mother, Krystal, was forced to take extra piloting jobs, and Valen became determined to seek a higher education, such as his father had, so he could better provide for himself and his mother.

Val left home to gain a government-funded education using the only tangible training he has -- flying. He was been accepted into the Beginhill Training Program, after which he agreed to grant UNSpacy a minimum five years of service in exchange for graduate-level schooling (i.e. SEP – the Spacy Education Program).

Valen was Assigned to the Jade Ospreys for training and three years later graduated. As a newly-commissioned second lieutenant, Valen was assigned as a VF Pilot with the Hollywood Knights. As a Knight, Valen flew during the Opal Incident, the Patagonia Liberation, and the Anti-UN invasion of Delta Pavonis IV.

Shortly after the destruction of the UNS Valhalla, and the resulting dismemberment of the Hollywood Knights, Valen was profiled as a prime candidate for Electronic Intelligence and Warfare training, and immediately directed to Einstein-08 for instruction.

He was assigned to the SVT-487 Darklighters for ELINT/EW training. On August 30, 2050 Valen received is transfer orders to join the SVQ-97 Tophatters to serve as Squad ELINT Officer.

Valen has earned two Purple Hearts (one while fighting off an intruder aboard the UNS Valhalla, and another during the Delta Pavonis Invasion).
