Good luck on the new job.
Re: Cobalt's Status
I will be out of town, starting tomorrow, and returning on Sunday evening. I will most likely not be posting until Monday.

Have a nice time.
Re: Cobalt's Status
As an essential worker, I have not been able to shelter in place or work from home. This also means I cannot shelter in place or work from home while riots and looters tear apart the city around me.
I am not safe but I am, at this time, in my office.

Re: Cobalt's Status
That is not a good thing. I want to say 'stay safe' but that doesn't apply. Maybe carry a taser or some pepper spray? It is a decent defense if you get jumped by a small number of people.
Re: Cobalt's Status
The laws in my state prohibits civilian ownership of pepper spray over 2.5 ounces. I am being careful and staying out of the neighborhoods and city centers as much as possible.

Re: Cobalt's Status
Why limit a non-lethal defensive weapon? Stupid. Still, 2.5 oz is ten one-second shots.
Trying to stay battened down as much as possible is a wise decision.

Eh... it's California. The restrictions on self defense are crazy.

Re: Cobalt's Status
Here, we can have them up to 4 oz and as many tasers as we can hold. But then, this is Texas. We can carry shotguns without an issue. Plus, as long as you shoot someone below the knee, it counts as a non-lethal weapon.
Re: Cobalt's Status
I think I can be prosecuted in California if I fart in someone's general direction.

Re: Cobalt's Status
Our reasoning is that if you were aiming below the knee, you were clearly trying to avoid vital organs and life-threatening damage. If you were the aggressor, they removes charges of attempted murder and whatnot. There is still some heavy charges to be found, though. Some can put you away for more than twenty years.
As a defender, it doesn't matter where you shoot someone. Here we have a couple of laws covering that stuff; I don't know if you have them, too. One is called "Stand Your Ground" where if someone attacks or threatens you and/or the people around you, you are allowed to use deadly force. Like, if someone says "Bitch, I'm'ma cut you" the SYG activates regardless of whether or no they were armed at the time. We also have the "Castle Doctrine" which is based off of the old phrase "a man's home is his castle." That one says that if someone enters your space (Home, car, tent, etc) without consent, they are automatically assumed to be an aggressive invader. That applies even for things like you came home and found someone sitting on your couch, eating a snack, and watching the television: aggressive invader.
You know, not that long ago, a cop came home and found someone doing that. He was eating icecream, as I recall. She claimed Castle Doctrine and killed him. Turned out, that was his home and not hers. People did not take kindly to that. She is now in prison, where she deserves to be.

Neither of those are on the books in California. I am obligated to retreat.

Then do your best to fly under their radar.
Re: Cobalt's Status
Update - We have been warned of a protest at my job site. There are 50 armed probation officers stationed here to protect the staff and youths.
If we go into lockdown, I will not be able to leave.

Re: Cobalt's Status
The best that you can do it stay away from the doors and windows. If things turn violent -and hopefully they won't- those would be the most dangerous locations. If you can work in a room with solid walls, you should do that, just in case.
Re: Cobalt's Status
My office is inside the facility. My window faces and interior courtyard. If they get that far, the jail has been breached.

Then stay where you are. That is a good place to be. It would be difficult for them to get there. Assuming that the protestors are not like the ones here in Texas:

Stay safe Wayne. We'll be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers for these riots/protests to end soon.

I am home safe. The protesters came within 2 miles but never left the downtown district.

That's good to hear. Now, if we can get them to remain at that distance tomorrow...
Re: Cobalt's Status
Been sick a couple of days. Home from work yesterday and today. Planning on going back tomorrow.
