Help please... I want to get to know Macross

I'm having a bit of trouble with the whole RoboTech / Macross thing. I only really only got to know the American Robotech series (too many years ago) and thought it could be a lot better... I remember seeing some of a movie "macross" which seem to be the same base storyline but in japanese. And I remember it not being cheezy..
This "Macross Plus" movie that is for sale everywhere...Is that the original of this whole transformable Mechs or is it something else all together?
Where can I obtain the movies/episodes that this site is founded or based on?
